Jean-Michel Cazes: The Maestro of Bordeaux’s Wine Renaissance
Jean-Michel Cazes, a renowned wine ambassador and former proprietor of Château Lych-Bages, has passed away at the age of 88.
Born in 1935 in Pauillac, Cazes had a remarkable career in engineering before transitioning to the wine industry. He earned an engineering degree from the École nationale supérieure des mines de Paris (1958) and a Master’s degree in petroleum engineering from the University of Texas. He served in the French airforce, IBM, and STAD (Empain-Schneider Group), where he held the position of president. In 1973, Cazes returned to Pauillac and joined his father, André, at Château Lynch-Bages.
His objective was to overhaul the vineyards and equipment, assembling a skilled team capable of maximizing the potential of the rich terroir. In 1975, Cazes initiated crucial modernization of the estate, which extended over fifteen years, gradually restoring the style, elegance, and consistency of the wines. He also undertook discreet marketing in China and the Far East from the 1990s, contributing to Lynch-Bages’ reputation as one of France’s top wine brands in China.
Cazes managed the family estates, including Château Villa Bel Air, Château Les Ormes-de-Pez, Château Cordeillan-Bages, L’Ostal Cazes in Languedoc, Domaine des Sénéchaux in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, and Xisto in Portugal until 2007. His 32-year-old son Jean-Charles Cazes assumed the company’s management in 2007. Cazes continued to collaborate with winemaker Brian Croser on a joint project they launched in 2002, Tapanappa in Coonawarra, South Australia.
In 1987, Cazes was appointed by French insurance firm AXA Millésimes to develop and manage its wine business, which included Château Pichon Longueville Baron, Château Suduiraut, Cantenac Brown, Petit Village chateaux in Bordeaux, Port producer Quinta do Noval in the Douro Valley, and Hungarian Tokaji producer Disznókő estate. He was characterized as an extraordinary ambassador of wine, an international wine envoy, and a Bordeaux wine representative.
