Irish Distillers Celebrates a Legacy: Billy Leighton’s 47-Year Journey and Passing the Torch
Billy Leighton, a seasoned whisky maker, is transitioning to a new role within Irish Distillers after dedicating 47 years to the company. As a pivotal figure in Irish whiskey’s resurgence, including the revival of Redbreast, he will assume the position of master blender emeritus starting 23 November. In this capacity, he will continue contributing to the production and development of the company’s whiskeys.
Dave McCabe, who has been with Irish Distillers since 2010 and was appointed blender in 2018, will succeed Leighton as master blender. McCabe, having honed his skills under Leighton’s mentorship, expressed excitement and gratitude for the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of a respected master.
Leighton, reflecting on his tenure, expressed deep gratitude for the opportunities and experiences provided by Irish Distillers. He praised McCabe’s passion, expertise, and knowledge, affirming the exceptional future of the company’s whiskeys under McCabe’s stewardship.
Nodjame Fouad, chairman and CEO of Irish Distillers, highlighted Leighton’s instrumental role in the success of their brands and the global renaissance of Irish whiskey. Fouad officially announced the passing of the master blender torch from Leighton to McCabe, expressing confidence in McCabe’s future contributions to the legacy of Irish Distillers.
