In an effort to reduce its environmental impact, St. Rémy has begun using bottles with less glass
In an effort to improve its reputation for being environmentally responsible, the St. Rémy brandy company has made its glass bottles lighter.
With parent firm Rémy Cointreau seeking to lower its carbon emissions per bottle by 50% by 2030, St-Rémy’s 70-cl bottles will see a 15-gram reduction in weight. In addition, the brand’s one-liter bottles will weigh 25 g less than their predecessors thanks to a redesign of the packaging.
In total, the owners of the brand anticipate that this change will result in savings of around 48 tons of glass per year, which will lead to a reduction of 70 tons of CO2.
Hervé Buzon, the international marketing director for St-Rémy, says that glass is one of the largest sources of CO2 in the beverage industry. He continued, “That’s why in the next few years, at St-Rémy, we will focus our efforts on lowering production, consumption, and shipping of glass.”
“We’ll do this by making our bottles even lighter, using different materials, or looking into the possibility of letting customers refill their bottles in-store.”
In 2022, St. Rémy switched to using recycled PET plastic for specific bottle sizes of its plastic St. Rémy VSOP and XO products. Also, the company has been trying to cut down on how much it uses secondary packaging. One way it has done this is by getting rid of gift boxes for its VSOP.
