Element Irish Whiskey: Conquering New Frontiers in Nigeria’s Growing Market
New Era Spirits, the parent company of Element Irish Whiskey, has witnessed a staggering 390% growth in the Nigerian market for Irish whiskey between 2016 and 2021. This burgeoning market, with its rapidly evolving economy and youthful demographic, presents a golden opportunity for premium spirits.
Fionn Cox’s Personal Journey
The brand’s co-founder, Fionn Cox, brings a personal connection to the region. A graduate of University College Cork, Cox cut his teeth in the industry as a brand ambassador for Jameson Irish Whiskey in West Africa. His tenure in Ghana involved spearheading Jameson’s presence in Nigeria, Cameroon, and the Ivory Coast.
“Nigeria is often dubbed the ‘giant of Africa’, a testament to its rapidly growing economy,” Cox explained.
“With its booming economy and one of the youngest demographics globally, Nigeria is primed for an influx of young professionals — precisely the audience Element Irish Whiskey is designed to appeal to.”
Expanding Beyond Traditional Markets
While the United States remains the largest market for Irish whiskey, Cox sees untapped potential in non-traditional territories like Africa and the Far East. These regions, with their burgeoning middle-class populations, offer fertile ground for premium brands.
Cox further elaborated, “Our core audience, mainly comprising Gen X and Y, represents the most substantial consumer segment. This group not only has a significant female consumer base but also shows the quickest expansion rate among new market entrants in their category. Yet, their preferences are not currently satisfied by existing market products.”
Since its debut in 2022, Element has already made its mark in seven markets.
The Element portfolio includes two expressions: the Fusion Series R/1.0, retailing at €49.50 (US$54), and the Lore Single Malt R/1.0, priced at €65 (US$71).
Fusion Series R/1.0, launched in November 2022, is a harmonious blend of single malt and single grain whiskeys, aged in ex-Bourbon, virgin American oak, oloroso Sherry, and seasoned stout casks.
Lore Single Malt, released in May 2023, undergoes a unique finishing process in ex-Bourbon, Madeira, and sweet Moscatel casks.
