Bonham’s Unveils Wine Auction for the Ages: From Vintage Bordeaux to California Cult Classics
Bonham’s Senior International Director of Wine, Richard Harvey, MW, underscores that a collection like this hits the market as rarely as a ’78 Bordeaux.
“Get ready to be blown away by famous Burgundies and Barolos from Giacomo Conterno and Bruno Giacosa‘s cellars, as well as classic red and white Bordeaux. For those with a West Coast vibe, brace for a Cali collection that mirrors the collector’s years in California,” Harvey blasts.
The California stash boasts gems like The Antagonists 1998 (estimate: £1,000-1,200 per bottle); The Hussy 2000 (£2,200-2,800); Suey Roussane 2000 (£1,400-1,600); More than Just A Number 2002 (£1,500-1,800); The Inaugural Grenache 2003 (£1,500-1,800); and a six-pack of Poker Face Syrah 2004 (£2,800-3,500).
The auction doesn’t stop there; it’s also loaded with high-voltage bottles from Burgundy, Bordeaux, Champagne, the Rhône, and an Italian lineup that would make a sommelier’s knees wobble. Among these are three bottles of Leroy Mazis-Chambertin 1978 (£4,800-6,000 each) and a magnum of **
Henri Jayer Vosne-Romanée, Cros Parantoux 1992** (£16,000-20,000). The white Burgundies are no slouch either, featuring Coche-Dury Corton-Charlemagne 1988 (£3,000-4,000 per bottle) and Chevalier-Montrachet 1993, Domaine d’Auvenay (£8,000-10,000 per bottle).
For Rhône aficionados, the lineup includes a bottle of Hermitage, La Chapelle 1961, Paul Jaboulet Aîné (£4,000-5,000); two lots of Hermitage 1990, Domaine Jean-Louis Chave (£4,200-5,000 each); and Châteauneuf-du-Pape Réservé 1995, Château Rayas (£3,500-4,200 each).
But wait, Italy’s not done. Take in the Barolos: Barolo Riserva, Monfortino 1955 Giacomo Conterno (£500-600) and Barolo Riserva, Monfortino 1964 Giacomo Conterno (£1,500-1,800), plus two magnums of Bruno Giacosa Barbaresco Riserva, Santo Stefano di Nieve, Red Label 1988 (£1,000-1,200 each).
