Beaujolais Nouveau 2023: Tradition Meets Innovation in French Vin de Primeur
Beaujolais Nouveau falls under the category of “vin de primeur” — a unique class of French wines, sanctioned by AOC regulations, that can be sold within the same year they are harvested.
Originally introduced to commemorate the conclusion of the harvest season, these nouveaux wines are traditionally celebrated with their release.
This year, the official unveiling of Beaujolais Nouveau took place on the third Thursday of November, marked on the 16th, accompanied by numerous celebratory events.
The establishment of this annual tradition dates back to 1985, when the Institut National des Appellations d’Origine (INAO) set the date. However, the tradition of vin de primeur extends much further into history.
Since the decision in 1985, Beaujolais Nouveau has gained popularity, initially spreading to North America and later to Asia in the 1990s.
Dutch firm IPL Brands BV, based in Amsterdam, has initiated the distribution of Beaujolais Nouveau wines to South Korea in 200ml cans, produced by Ardagh Metal Packaging (AMP).
The canning operation is managed by the family-run In Can we Trust (ICT Drinks), specialists in France, recently opening a dedicated facility for wine canning.
Jacek Madry, Chief Commercial Officer at Ardagh Metal Packaging-Europe, expressed his satisfaction, noting, “It is truly rewarding to witness consumers in Asia experiencing Beaujolais Nouveau in our cans. Our Wine Cans are designed to be airtight, safeguarding the freshness and aromas of such a youthful wine.”
