Artemisia Gentileschi: A Journey Through Courage and Artistic Passion at Palazzo Ducale
Artemisia Gentileschi: An Emblem of Courage and Passion
Palazzo Ducale in Genoa proudly presents “Artemisia Gentileschi: Courage and Passion,” running from 16 November 2023 to 1 April 2024. This exhibition pays homage to Artemisia Gentileschi (1593 – circa 1653), a trailblazing female artist and the first woman admitted to an art academy. Gentileschi’s life, marked by personal tragedies, including the early loss of her mother, societal constraints, a tumultuous relationship with her father, Orazio Gentileschi, and the traumatic aftermath of a rape by painter Agostino Tassi, shapes her powerful artistic narrative.
Curated by Costantino d’Orazio and Anna Orlando, the exhibition showcases over 50 masterpieces sourced from across Europe, capturing pivotal family moments, revolutionary artistic techniques, dramatic imagery, and instances of female empowerment.
Visitors will gain insights into Gentileschi’s complex relationship with her father, initially characterized by rivalry, evolving into eventual reconciliation. The exhibit highlights the unique artistic language of Artemisia, showcasing her transcending the style of her father, Orazio, and their shared influence from Caravaggio. An audio guide is included with the ticket purchase.
Organized by Arthemisia con Palazzo Ducale Fondazione per la Cultura, the Municipality of Genoa, and the Liguria Region, the exhibition is part of the “The Art of Solidarity” project. This initiative supports women’s health, with a portion of ticket sales going to related projects.
For art enthusiasts, the concurrent Steve McCurry photographic exhibition at the Sottoporticato of Palazzo Ducale offers an additional cultural experience.
