Why Govone (and its Christmas Markets) Will Steal Your Heart
The Govone territory appears to have been inhabited since Roman times. Several testimonies and late-medieval documents, including a tombstone bearing an inscription, support this thesis. The town played a significant role as a commercial hub and later as a stronghold during medieval times.
Under the rule of the bishop of Asti, Govone was of considerable importance, as it was later under the Solaro family, a noble lineage from Asti. Life in the village has always revolved around the imposing castle building, first constructed around the year 1000. What can be admired today, however, is the result of multiple reconstructions over the centuries.
The first significant renovation was commissioned by the Solaro Counts in the 17th century. The castle’s design was influenced by architects Benedetto Alfieri (north façade) and Guarino Guarini (south façade). It later came under the Savoys, though they left it nearly in ruins when relocating to Sardinia. Eventually, the Alfieri Counts restored it before ceding it to Carlo Felice. During World War II, Michelina Saracco, a bus service owner, played a heroic role by hiding members of Vittorio Segre’s Jewish family.
What to See in and Around the Village
The Baroque Castle, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, houses the town hall and hosts exhibitions and events. Its English-style park, created by the Solaro Counts, and the Church of the Holy Spirit, connected to the castle by a gallery, are particularly striking.
