Not Just a Villa: Villa Litta Is Milan’s Most Astonishing Artistic Playground
If you think that at the gates of Milan there are only industries and traffic, prepare to change your mind: Villa Visconti Borromeo Litta in Lainate is an unexpected masterpiece of art, ingenuity and wonder. Famous for its Nymphaeum and incredible water features, this sixteenth-century villa was conceived as a “place of delight” to amaze guests, nobles and travellers with mosaics, sculptures and a dream park. Even today, thanks to restorations and a full calendar of events, Villa Litta offers a journey back in time, among frescoed rooms, geometric gardens and fountains that surprise adults and children.
History and identity
The villa was built in 1585 thanks to Pirro I Visconti Borromeo, who transformed an old country farmhouse into a residence inspired by the splendor of the Tuscan Medici villas. In the following centuries, new buildings were added, Italian gardens, frescoed halls, up to the English grove designed in the nineteenth century. The Visconti Borromeo family always entrusted the works to the best artists and architects of the time: Martino Bassi, Camillo Procaccini, il Morazzone worked here. The villa went through alternating fortunes, between moments of splendor and periods of abandonment, until in 1971 the Municipality of Lainate purchased it and began an enormous restoration, returning one of the most extraordinary monuments in Lombardy to the community.
The Nymphaeum: art, ingenuity and water games
The secret heart of the villa, the Nymphaeum is one of the few still functioning in Italy: a true “artist’s cave” built between 1585 and 1589, with rooms covered in black and white pebble mosaics, shells, stucco, frescoes and automatons. Here the water games are still active: sudden fountains, gushing floors, hidden splashes that surprise visitors. The Nymphaeum was designed to amaze and entertain, and even today it does not disappoint anyone, especially on guided tours with demonstrations of the water games, even at night for an even more magical effect. Don’t miss the Wunderkammer, the themed caves and the rooms of the automatons, for a true journey through Renaissance art and science.
The Palaces and the Historic Park
The villa includes several buildings: the original sixteenth-century body and the “Quarto nuovo” from the eighteenth century, with decorated rooms, frescoes and the spectacular Tribuna dei Musici, a monumental balcony designed for concerts and parties. Outside, the large historic park opens up: geometric flowerbeds, hedges, classical statues, monumental fountains such as that of Galatea and the group of the Rape of Proserpina, a green theatre for open-air shows and, since the nineteenth century, an English-style grove designed by the architect Luigi Canonica, where nature becomes wilder and more romantic.
Visits, events and curiosities
Villa Litta is open to the public from May to October: guided tours allow you to discover both the Nymphaeum (with water games always active!) and the noble apartments and the park. Every summer the villa hosts concerts, theatrical performances, art exhibitions and historical re-enactments in costume. Some guided tours are also designed for families and schools, others are at night to experience the magic of the illuminated villa. The villa is also a location for weddings and photo shoots. Don’t miss the special opening days of the Nymphaeum, where you can attend complete demonstrations of all the hydraulic mechanisms.
