Medieval Frescoes, Risotto, and River Parks—Discover the Real Melegnano
Often those who travel to Milan by train or car only see one name that quickly passes by: Melegnano. But behind this stop in the Bassa Milanese there is a city with a surprising history, made up of castles, epic battles, an elegant historic center, parks, good food and a quality of life that conquers those who live there and those who visit it. Why choose Melegnano for a stop, a trip or even to live there? And what is different compared to the usual provincial cities of Lombardy? Get ready to discover a city that is much more than a satellite of Milan: Melegnano has character, memory and many stories to tell.
History and identity
Melegnano – formerly Marignano – was born and prospered thanks to its strategic position: here the Via Emilia, the Lambro and the roads connecting Milan to Lodi, Pavia and Piacenza intersect. From a simple agricultural village, in the Middle Ages it transformed into a defensive bastion of the Visconti and Sforza families, who left an indelible mark. The city experienced its moment of international fame in 1515 with the Battle of Marignano, between Francis I of France and the Swiss and Milanese troops: one of the bloodiest battles of the modern era, followed by centuries of reconstruction and political changes.
During the 19th century, Melegnano experienced a new season of development, especially with the arrival of the railway. Today it is a dynamic city, a crossroads for commuters but also a place of culture, greenery and local initiatives.
What to see
Medici Castle
The true symbol of the city: built by the Visconti in the 13th century, then expanded by the Sforza, the Melegnano Castle is a rare example of Lombard fortified architecture still intact. Inside you can admire frescoed halls, the famous “Sala delle Battaglie” (a cycle of 16th-century frescoes that tell the story of the castle and the city), as well as temporary exhibitions, cultural events and guided tours. The park that surrounds it is perfect for a walk or to immerse yourself in history.
Cathedral of San Giovanni Battista
Mother church of the city, with a neo-Gothic façade and surprising interiors: marble altars, stained glass windows, side chapels and a collection of works of art ranging from the 16th to the 19th century. The main religious and popular celebrations are held here.
Historic center and Porta di Sant’Andrea
The heart of Melegnano is a maze of paved streets, lively squares and porticoes. Worth seeing are the historic Porta di Sant’Andrea, the only remaining access to the ancient medieval walls, and the noble palaces with typical Lombard courtyards.
War Memorial and urban parks
The city centre is enriched by monuments, fountains and a series of public parks such as the Parco del Castello and the Parco del Lambro, which offer relaxation, sports and corners of nature even to the little ones.
Neighborhoods and surroundings
Melegnano is made up of many small neighborhoods: from the residential area of Giardino to the historic neighborhoods around the castle, up to the new development areas towards the south. In the surrounding area, just a few minutes by car, there are abbeys, historic farmhouses, cycle paths along the Lambro and the Muzzetta nature reserve, a paradise for birdwatchers and walkers.
Itineraries and nature
The Parco Agricolo Sud Milano embraces the city, offering walking and cycling itineraries among farmhouses, cultivated fields, fountains and old mills. Along the Lambro river there are cycle paths and running routes among bridges, poplar groves and wetlands. In the spring and summer months, the area becomes a destination for botanical excursions and observation of the local fauna.
Gastronomy, wines and typical products
Melegnano and the Bassa Milanese are a mine of authentic flavours:
- Risotto alla Milanese, ossobuco, cassoela, tripe alla Milanese and polenta are the cornerstones of traditional cuisine.
- Local cured meats, such as Milanese salami, coppa and cotechino, can be found in markets and typical trattorias.
- Lombard cheeses such as Gorgonzola, Grana Padano and Crescenza are never missing from the tables.
- The desserts? Pan de mej, offelle and rustic cakes from historic bakeries are true delights.
- As for wines, the city is located on the edge of the Pavese denominations: here you can taste Oltrepò Pavese DOC (Barbera, Bonarda, Pinot Nero, Riesling) and the sparkling white wines typical of the surrounding countryside.
