Koufonisia: The Secret Greek Islands That Still Live Like Paradise Lost
If you are looking for the Greece of your dreams, the one that has not yet succumbed to mass tourism, where the sea is a palette of blues and the pace of life is still marked by the wind and the sun, the Koufonisia islands are the perfect destination. In reality, it is a small archipelago: Pano Koufonisi (the main island, lively and on a human scale) and Kato Koufonisi (wild and uninhabited, except for a tavern by the sea). Few roads, no chaos, Caribbean beaches, very fresh fish and an authentic Greece that still knows how to surprise you.
History and Identity
The Koufonisia have always been islands of fishermen, shepherds and sailors. Inhabited since ancient times (remains of Cycladic settlements and prehistoric tombs have been found), for centuries they were a refuge for pirates and a place of trade between Naxos, Amorgos and the other Small Cyclades. Today they have less than 400 inhabitants, who live mainly from fishing, quality tourism and small-scale agriculture. The port of Pano Koufonisi, with its colorful fishing boats and windmill, is the beating heart of everything: here every day the freshest catch of the Cyclades arrives, ready to end up on the tables of the taverns.
What to See
Chora (the Main Village)
A maze of white alleys, blue houses and bougainvillea, artisan shops, cafes and bakeries that smell of warm bread. In the evening the square comes alive with taverns, ice cream shops and children playing football: everything here is on a human scale, no cars (you move on foot or by bike), only the sound of the sea.
The Beaches
Pori: a crescent of fine sand, crystal clear sea, often deserted even in high season. A dream for those who love swimming or snorkeling among caves and cliffs.
Fanos and Italida: two more heavenly beaches, connected by a coastal path that in 30 minutes offers you spectacular views. Turquoise water, sandy seabed, perfect also for those traveling with children.
Ammos: the port beach, a stone’s throw from the cafes and shops, ideal for a dip upon arrival or before leaving.
Natural Pool: a pool of water between the rocks, a few minutes walk from Pori, perfect for those seeking tranquility and breathtaking photos.
Kato Koufonisi
Completely wild island: only one tavern by the sea (the legendary “Venetsanos”), a few fishermen’s houses and a series of golden beaches (Nero, Detis, Laki). Here time really stops: no electricity, only sun, sea and stars. You can get there by taxi boat from the port, in less than 10 minutes.
Nature and Activities
Koufonisia is perfect for those who love:
- Snorkeling and diving among caves, ravines and wrecks.
- Trekking along the paths that connect all the beaches, passing between mills, solitary chapels, old ovens and dry vegetable gardens.
- Boat: Rent a small boat or join mini-cruises that take you to Kato Koufonisi, the sea caves of Glaronisi and the hidden bays of the Small Cyclades.
- Bike: the best way to tour the island effortlessly, enjoying every view and every scent.
Gastronomy, Wines and Typical Products
The cuisine of Koufonisia is authentic, simple, irresistible:
- Freshly caught fish and seafood: grilled octopus, calamari, sea bream salad, sea urchins, prawns.
- Kavourmas (spiced preserved pork), goat stews, fresh feta, local honey, creamy yogurt.
- Savory pies with wild herbs, wood-fired bread, almond and honey sweets.
- Among the wines, we drink the Cycladic labels (Assyrtiko, Monemvasia, Mandilaria), fresh white wines and mineral rosés that perfectly accompany seafood cuisine.

Note on Koufonisia/Koufonissia
The name Koufonisia (or Koufonissia, in the alternative transliteration) indicates a tiny archipelago of the Small Cyclades composed of two main islands: Pano Koufonisi (the inhabited and touristic one) and Kato Koufonisi (wild and without villages, reachable only by boat). Sometimes “Koufonisi” is also used in the singular to indicate only the main island. In any case, the two terms always refer to these heavenly islands between Naxos and Amorgos.
