Hiking Through History: Exploring the Enchanting City of Kawkaban
Rising on a rock more than 9,000 feet above sea level, Kawkaban is among Yemen’s most intriguing cities. Known for its amazing vistas of the valley below, its historic buildings, and its significance in Yemeni culture, this ancient fortified settlement—whose Arabic name means “Two Stars”—links to Shibam (not to be confused with the “Manhattan of the Desert”) along a picturesque path across the mountain.

Kawkaban has a more than a millennium-long history. Renowned for its defensive qualities, the city has seen many sieges over the ages. With carved stone houses and windows covered with alabaster inlays and stained glass, Kawkaban’s architecture captures typical Yemeni construction.
