From Medieval Battles to Modern Charm: What Awaits You in Guimarães?
On December 13, 2001, UNESCO included the historic center of Guimarães among the World Heritage Sites. A well-deserved recognition for a city rich in historical reminiscences, which has managed to preserve its heritage and public spaces for the enjoyment of visitors.
For the Portuguese, Guimarães holds a special symbolic value, as it was here—on a field near the castle walls—that D. Afonso Henriques won the Battle of São Mamede on June 24, 1128, in the presence of D. Teresa, his mother and daughter of Afonso VI of Castile and León. This victory marked the beginning of the journey that led to the foundation of the Kingdom of Portugal, of which he became the first king.
Exploring the Sacred Hill: The Heart of Guimarães
Begin your visit at the Sacred Hill, crowned by the highly evocative Guimarães Castle and the small Romanesque church of São Miguel. According to tradition, Afonso Henriques was baptized in this modest temple, in the baptismal font that can still be seen inside.
An imposing statue by Soares dos Reis (1834), located lower down, allows us to imagine the figure of Portugal’s first king. In the immediate vicinity stands the Ducal Palace, now a palace-museum, whose construction dates back to the 15th century.
A Panoramic View from Monte da Penha
For a magnificent view of the city, drive 7 km to Monte da Penha, from where you can admire one of the most impressive panoramas of northern Portugal.
The road passes by the Pousada de Santa Marinha da Costa, an old convent founded by D. Mafalda de Sabóia, wife of D. Afonso Henriques. This building, transformed into a pousada by architect Fernando Távora, blends different styles and eras. The 18th-century church, the cloister, the cells converted into rooms, and the beautiful porch of São Jerónimo overlooking the garden are all worth a stop.
You can also take the cable car, which in just a few minutes connects the city center to this mountain retreat, where the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora da Penha stands.
What to See in Guimarães
Guimarães Castle: A Fortress of Legends and Battles
Located on Monte Largo—referred to as alpis latitus in medieval Latin documents—the castle evokes the mix of legend and heroism that surrounds the origins of Portugal.
In 968, Countess Mumadona built a fortified structure to protect the population from Viking raids from the north and Muslim attacks from the south. Later, Count Henrique, entrusted with the governance of Portugal by Afonso VI of León, reinforced the castle, making it the stronghold we see today, dominated by the watchtower.
The castle was key to the military struggles that helped shape the Portuguese kingdom, including the battles against Afonso VII of León in 1127. Over time, artillery advancements led to its military decline, but in the 20th century, it was carefully restored to its former grandeur.
Paço dos Duques de Bragança: A Palace of Power
The Ducal Palace was built in the 15th century by D. Afonso de Barcelos, the first Duke of Braganza. Inspired by French stately homes, it later fell into disuse when the Braganza family moved to Vila Viçosa, in Alentejo.
By 1807, it had deteriorated and was used as a military barracks until its restoration in 1937. On June 24, 1959, exactly 831 years after the Battle of São Mamede, it was restored to its original splendor.
The museum inside the palace houses:
- 17th-century furniture
- A collection of ancient weapons
- Four massive tapestries depicting the Portuguese conquests in North Africa
