Corchiano Uncovered: A Timeless Escape into Italy’s Medieval Heart in 2024
Nestled among the rolling hills of the province of Viterbo, in the heart of Tuscia, is an enchanting village, enveloped in a bygone era atmosphere that has consistently evoked its undeniable romantic charm.
Today we are in Corchiano, a small village with ancient homes and winding alleys that look like they came straight out of a painting. Corchiano is the ideal location for a peaceful spring walk, surrounded by the beauty of a magnificent town that has preserved its medieval aura over time.
The History of Corchiano
The first settlements date from the 7th century BC, when Corchiano was known as Falisco. It gradually became an important part of the Agro-Fascina area’s commercial traffic. However, during the Roman era, its influence began to wane, resulting in a period of severe economic and social decline. Nonetheless, due to its privileged position, it reclaimed an important role in the political sphere of the time.
Even this period of prosperity was short-lived. In fact, Corchiano experienced significant instability during the 11th and 12th centuries, as it was the site of numerous conflicts between the Farnese and Orsini families. Another extremely difficult period for the village occurred in 1798, when a terrible fire destroyed the city as a result of clashes with French troops, forever defining the community.
What to See in Corchiano
The village of Corchiano sits atop a tuff rock overlooking the Rio Fratta. Tuscia’s enchanting landscape combines with the region’s historical heritage, creating a one-of-a-kind and evocative experience. The narrow streets that wind through the historic center, as well as the picturesque houses decorated with colorful flowers, provide enchanting views around every corner.
The visit to this town can only begin at Piazza IV Novembre, with the majestic Farnese fountain that dominates the ruins of Corclanum Castle, an ancient fortification symbolizing the village’s troubled history. Piazza Valentino and religious buildings containing true artistic masterpieces are nearby.
Among these, the church of Sant’Egidio stands out, which jealously preserves Torresani’s frescoes from the 16th century, and the church of San Biagio, a 14th-century place of worship with magnificent decorations.
For trekkers, however, the gorges of Rio Fratta are a must-see—a wild and unspoiled natural oasis dotted with ancient caves that add to the adventure’s allure.
