Caldarola: Explore the Medieval Marvels of the Marche

Today, tourists lean out from the battlements of the castle, but centuries ago, it was the noble lords of the Marche who stood there. The landscape they gazed upon was similar to what you can see today: modern buildings and roads mix with the rolling hills, vineyards, and centuries-old trees that dominate the province of Macerata.

Visiting Caldarola is like stepping back in time, surrounded by art, castles, and a fairy-tale setting with a clear medieval imprint. Home to fewer than two thousand people, Caldarola is a charming town nestled in the hills of the Marche region.

The Rich History of Caldarola

The highest peaks in the area, Poggio la Pagnotta and Poggio la Serra, stand as ancient guardians over the village. Most of the landscape is soft and sloping towards rivers, dotted with farms. Caldarola began as a peasant settlement between the 9th and 10th centuries, eventually becoming a fiefdom of the Camerino State in the Middle Ages. Declaring independence in 1400, the village thrived in its Golden Age towards the end of the 16th century, when Pope Sixtus V initiated major urban development. Evangelisto Pallotta, under papal direction, adorned the town with a grand square and churches, commissioning De Magistris to paint the façades.

What to See in Caldarola

Many of Caldarola’s most beautiful structures date from this time, including the Church of San Martino, elevated to Collegiate status in 1590 with a papal bull. The church façade bears the coat of arms of Sixtus V and the symbol of Cardinal Pallotta. Not far away is the Collegiate Church of St. Gegorio, built on the remains of San Gregorio della Vigna. Another notable structure is the Sanctuary of the Most Holy Mary of the Mount, consecrated at the end of the 18th century and designed by Augustoni.

Caldarola is also home to three fascinating castles. Croce Castle, with its imposing curtain walls and pointed arch entrance, once protected the southern and eastern sides of the hill. Vestignano Castle, surrounded by dense woods, is famous for its cylindrical tower and ancient streets. Lastly, Pallotta Castle sits on Colcù Hill, serving as a summer residence for Cardinal Pallotta in the late 16th century. This castle hosted notable guests such as Queen Christina of Sweden and Pope Clement VIII.

Festivals and Events in Caldarola

Though Caldarola seems frozen in time, the past comes even more alive during the annual reenactment of the Joust of the Castle, held on the first and second Sundays of August. The event begins with the Offerta del Doppiere, a solemn ritual performed in Renaissance costumes, followed by a challenge among knights representing various castles. Other events include the Bean Festival with Pork Rinds and Tagliatelle with Summer Truffle at the end of July, as well as a splendid artistic nativity scene during the Christmas season.

When to Visit and How to Get There

The Marche hills enjoy a pleasant climate with continental and Mediterranean influences. While summers are hot and dry, winters can be cold and rainy. Average temperatures range from 0°C to 9°C in January and from 15°C to 30°C in July and August. Spring and autumn are the rainiest seasons, with about nine rainy days per month.

To reach Caldarola, travelers by car should take the A14 motorway, exiting at Civitanova Marche. From there, follow the SS77 towards Tolentino/Macerata and exit at Caldarola. The nearest airport is Ancona, about 80 km away.
