Between Sculptures and Blossoms: Why Villa Carlotta is the Crown Jewel of Lake Como
When we talk about Villa Carlotta, we immediately think of a place of incomparable beauty: here, Lake Como dons its best attire, between history, art, intoxicating scents and dazzling colors. This historic residence, set between Tremezzo and Cadenabbia, invites you on a journey through sumptuous halls, masterpieces by Canova and Hayez, and a botanical park that explodes with azaleas, camellias and panoramic terraces. Villa Carlotta isn’t just a tourist destination: it is a living testament for lovers of culture, nature and the timeless fascination of lakefront villas.
History and identity
Born at the end of the 17th century by the will of Marquis Giorgio Clerici, the villa soon passed to Gian Battista Sommariva, enlightened politician and patron, who transformed it into a real neoclassical art gallery. In the 19th century, it was bought by Princess Marianna of Prussia as a wedding gift for her daughter Carlotta. Her husband, Duke George II of Saxe-Meiningen, was a passionate botanist and created one of the most extraordinary parks on the lake. After the First World War, Villa Carlotta became public and today is a museum and garden open in every season.
What to see
Museum and art collections
The villa houses some of the most evocative rooms on Lake Como, adorned with frescoes, original furniture, stuccos and neoclassical works by Canova, Hayez, Thorvaldsen. The Salone dei Marmi, the Sala di Napoleone and the Galleria dei Gessi tell of the love for art of the owners. Among the most precious pieces: “Romeo and Juliet’s Last Farewell” by Hayez and Canova’s sculptures, true icons of the Italian neoclassic.
The Botanical Garden
Eight hectares of pure magic: over 150 varieties of azaleas, centuries-old camellias, rhododendrons, citrus tunnels, magnolias, palms, ancient ferns and even a bamboo forest. Here, the Italian garden with its fountains and hedges meets the more romantic English park, with the “valley of ferns” opening onto terraces and unforgettable vistas of the lake.
Views and pathways
Villa Carlotta unfolds over several levels: from the panoramic terraces the view of Lake Como is unique. Winding paths lead through statues, fountains, citrus tunnels and monumental woods, offering new perspectives and atmospheres at every step.
Visits, events and curiosities
Open from spring until late autumn, Villa Carlotta is always alive: exhibitions, classical music concerts, botanical workshops for adults and children, flower festivals and tastings among the blooming gardens. Guided tours reveal the secrets of the Nymphaeum, the rare botanical species, and the rooms full of art and stories. The villa is also a dream setting for weddings and photo shoots, especially when the azaleas are in bloom.
