Experience Nature’s Wonderland at Xcaret Park: Playa del Carmen’s Aquatic Paradise
Near Playa del Carmen, there is a place where nature, culture, and entertainment coexist in a mix of great scenographic effect: the Xcaret Park. To get there, just drive south on the 307 highway for 7 kilometers from Playa del Carmen.
History of Xcaret
A wealthy architect named Miguel Quintana Pali bought a narrow strip of beachfront land south of Playa del Carmen in 1984. During the reorganization of the area, cenotes, which are typical of the Yucatan and look like caves, started to be found, and the area turned out to have some surprising natural beauty. Then Quintana realized that this area needed to be turned into a public park instead of a place for a dream villa. He opened Xcaret Park six years after that.
Attractions at Xcaret
What can you do at Xcaret? First of all, Xcaret is a water park, and many of its most popular attractions have something to do with water.
The two underground rivers may be the most interesting natural features near Playa del Carmen. Nature has carved out a path that is just over a kilometer long. Gentle currents will carry you through beautiful places where you can snorkel in water that is truly clear and is surrounded by amazing rocks.
Don’t worry, people who don’t like swimming can go on a river trip along the Paradise River. It might not be as exciting as the underground rivers, but you’ll get to see the jungle plants up close.
Beautiful Beach and Coral Reef Aquarium
The beach at Xcaret is another thing that has made it famous around the world. It has palm trees and tropical palapas, and the water is so clear and crystalline that it has nothing to envy a tropical paradise like Bora-Bora.
If you still want more nature, Xcaret’s Coral Reef Aquarium is a magical way to get it. This aquarium lets you explore all the different environments of a coral reef and learn to recognize the huge variety of life in this area. And don’t forget that it is an interactive aquarium where you can touch the plants and animals that live in this particular area.
Dolphin Swim and Other Unique Attractions
If your budget allows it, you shouldn’t miss the Dolphin Swim program, which lets you swim with dolphins, which are the smartest mammals after humans. Being in the water with these beautiful, happy animals is a thrilling experience, and it’s easy to see why this activity can also help people feel better.
Don’t forget about the smaller attractions, which are actually very interesting and unique. The butterfly pavilion, which is 16 meters tall and the largest of its kind in the world, is a great place to go. Every day, you can look forward to tropical plants and a huge variety and number of butterflies. Then you can go to the Deer Shelter, also known as the deer’s house, the Jaguar Island, and the Tapir House.
Nighttime Activities at Xcaret
Then, when the sun goes down, Xcaret doesn’t stop living. In fact, the night is full of fun things to do and really interesting shows. The main shows take place at the Grand Tlachco theater. There is also the traditional Mayan game of ball, which has nothing to do with human sacrifices. Then there’s the Mexican Charreria, which is kind of like a rodeo but with horse shows.
