In the scenic center of Piazza della Repubblica, the Palazzo Comunale of Cortona stands out as an unmistakable symbol of the city and its history. History and Architecture
The original construction dates back to the 12th century and reflects the austere character of medieval tower houses, with the typical bell tower and a large civic clock that has marked the life of Cortona since 1500. In the 16th century, the building was expanded, adding a Renaissance wing with arches and a loggia that opens onto Via Roma, a sign of the growing importance of the city in the Medici period. During the 19th century, the architect Giuseppe Castellucci oversaw a philological restoration that brought to light the oldest elements and gave the palace its current appearance. The entrance portal, flanked by the pietra serena staircase, leads to the Salone del Consiglio, embellished with a monumental 16th-century fireplace attributed to Cristofanello.
What to See and Curiosities
Outside, the palace is dominated by the bell tower (Torre dell’Orologio), which is today one of the most photographed panoramic points in the city. Next to the staircase is the column with the Marzocco, the lion symbol of Florentine power added in the 16th century when Cortona came under the influence of Florence. Not to be missed, during popular festivals, is the parade of historical figures in costume who animate the square and the palace with events and re-enactments.
Inside, the Salone del Consiglio can often be visited during special openings or cultural events. The space preserves historic furnishings and a series of commemorative plaques that tell key moments in Cortona’s history.
