Origins and History
Fetească Neagră is one of the oldest grape varieties in Romania: documents mention it as early as the Middle Ages and its diffusion has always been linked to the territories between the Carpathians and the Prut River. The name means “black girl,” to underline the dark beauty of the grapes and the mysterious charm of the wine. Forgotten for decades during the Soviet period (when more productive varieties were preferred), today it is the protagonist of a proud rebirth, driven by young producers and historic wineries that bet on quality, typicality, and long life in the bottle.
Production Method
Fetească Neagră is worked with great attention to phenolic maturity: the harvest is manual and fermentations often take place at a controlled temperature, with medium-long macerations to extract color, aromas, and structure. In many versions, aging in steel is preferred for fresher wines, while the top labels spend long periods in oak barriques or tonneaux, often Romanian, which add sweet spices and roundness without covering the fruit.
Types and Styles
In Romania you can find Fetească Neagră both in a young and crisp version, with aromas of fresh red fruit and vibrant tannins, and in reserve editions, dense, concentrated, ready to evolve even 10 years in the bottle. Some producers also offer rosé and, more rarely, blends with Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon to soften the profile, but the pure wines are those that best tell its soul.
Organoleptic Characteristics
Deep color, ruby with purple reflections. On the nose it is a journey through black cherry, ripe plum, blackberry, to which are added notes of dark chocolate, tobacco, black pepper, and a delicate smoky vein. In the mouth Fetească Neagră is round, warm, supported by silky tannins and a freshness typical of the continental climate: the sip is enveloping, rich, always dynamic. The best examples surprise for the balance between power and drinkability.
Fetească Neagră Food Pairings
This structured red pairs beautifully with rich and fatty dishes: paella, vitello tonnato, chicken curry, pulled pork, empanadas, hamburgers, filet Wellington. Try it with aged cheeses such as Pecorino di grotta, Gorgonzola piccante and Blu di Bufala. Also excellent with game or typical Eastern recipes such as sarmale (meat and cabbage rolls) and mici.

On the European market, Fetească Neagră still offers an amazing quality/price ratio: from 6–8 euros for correct supermarket labels, up to 30 euros for signature crus or reserves from small producers.
