Govone Castle: A Piedmontese Jewel of Royalty and Celebration
The Savoy palace of Govone Castle is famous for its Christmas event. The Father Christmas House is set up here. Perched atop a hill, it seems to guard the town and the vast Tanaro valley below. A masterpiece by Guarino Guarini, the Castle of Govone has been counted among the Piedmontese Savoy residences, listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, welcoming visitors with elegance and history.
The History of the Castle
The renovation entrusted to Guarini was continued in the 18th century, with notable contributions such as the north façade by Benedetto Alfieri, a disciple of Filippo Juvarra. Privately owned until 1792, the castle’s history is a mix of splendour and adversity. It was auctioned in 1810, then acquired by Prince Carlo Felice, who dedicated himself to restoring and modernising it. Since 1897, the castle has been owned by the municipal administration, preserving its legacy.
A Visit to the Savoy Residence
Visitors can explore:
- Elegant staircases featuring refined wrought iron railings with Queen Maria Cristina of Bourbon’s initials.
- The flats of the king and queen, adorned with frescoes by Andrea Piazza and Carlo Pagani, with stucco work by Luigi Vacca.
- The Hall of Honour, frescoed with mythological themes like Niobe and her children, and Chinese Halls, with tapestries depicting oriental scenes of silk, tea, and fauna.
The English-style park surrounding the castle blends symmetry with naturalistic charm. In spring, it becomes a red carpet of ‘Eye of the Sun’ tulips, a mystical bulb from the Far East.
Castle Events and Curiosities
- Father Christmas’ House: Every December, Govone Castle transforms into a magical Christmas destination with reindeer, elves, and fairy-tale characters.
- Tulips at Court: Every spring, the castle gardens burst with the ephemeral bloom of wild tulips, complemented by periwinkles and muscari.
