The history of Gargonza Castle: a look into the past
The most reliable sources trace the origins of Gargonza Castle to around 1150, when they constructed it as a defensive bastion between the cities of Arezzo and Siena. The Ubertini family initially owned it, followed by the Aretini family, then Siena, and finally Florence in 1307. It was in those years that Dante, banished from Florence, found refuge in the village, participating in the conference between the White Guelphs and the Ghibellines who tried to fight the Black Guelphs together, albeit without success.
The village lost its autonomy during the Florentine hegemony, and a violent revolt by the Gargonzini largely destroyed it in 1433. For many centuries, the small community devoted itself to agriculture and wool production. Count Roberto Guicciardini Corsi Salviati initiated a complete restoration of the town in the 1930s, enhancing its original structure and masterfully maintaining the tangible signs of its ancient splendor.
