Pieve di Cadore: Alpine Charm and Rich History at the Foot of the Dolomites
Pieve di Cadore is a small but delightful village in the province of Belluno. As its name suggests, its territory is crossed by the Piave River and extends to the slopes of Mount Antelao, the imposing Dolomite peak that, at over 3,000 meters, is the second highest peak in the region. Pieve di Cadore is a popular tourist destination for those who love alpine tourism, skiing, and enjoying a winter getaway, but as we will see, it offers much more than just winter attractions. It’s a treasure chest of natural and cultural wonders waiting to be discovered.
A Glimpse Into Pieve di Cadore’s History
The name Pieve di Cadore is closely tied to World War I as it was one of the main theaters of war against the Austro-Hungarian Empire. However, the history of Pieve goes back much further. Archaeological findings and remains of a Roman building (in Piazza Municipio) testify to ancient settlements here, and since then, Pieve di Cadore has seen various historical eras, leaving behind traces of a proud rural and mountain civilization.
Palazzo della Magnifica Comunità
One must-visit site is the Palazzo della Magnifica Comunità, built in 1447. Despite the damage suffered over the centuries and subsequent reconstruction, you can still admire its crenellated tower and, inside, the praetor’s hall with its carved wooden ceiling. Around the hall, 40 niches house the busts of illustrious people from Cadore who have shaped its history.
Titian’s Birthplace and Artistic Legacy
Speaking of famous personalities, Titian, the great Italian painter of the 16th century, was born here in Pieve di Cadore. To honor the artist who brought prestige to the town, Titian’s Birthplace has been restored to reveal the original doors and windows, and it’s now open to the public. It’s an excellent spot to connect with the artistic history of Pieve di Cadore.
For a coffee break, nothing beats an equally historic venue. The Gran Caffè Tiziano has long been a meeting place and cultural hub, now also home to a bookshop filled with fascinating reads.
The Eyeglass Industry and Museum
The more recent history of Pieve di Cadore links the village to the production of eyeglasses. Many prominent Italian eyeglass manufacturers were born and still operate here, making Pieve di Cadore a significant hub in this industry. The Eyeglass Museum recounts the economic history of this industrial district and the evolution of eyeglasses, featuring a rich collection of 1,600 valuable pieces including glasses, lenses, cases, binoculars, signs, and telescopes, many from France.
Nature Trails and Scenic Routes
To discover the natural wonders of Pieve di Cadore, you can follow a path starting from Casa del Tiziano, descending towards the Eyeglass Museum, and continuing to the Pier Fortunato Calvi Monument, a hero of the Risorgimento. At the crossroads, you can turn right to admire the view towards the Sottocastello Dam and, in the distance, the grand Ponte Europa.
Returning to the crossroads, a small road leads to a beautiful beech forest. From the clearing, you can either take the path to Monte Castello or go down the road to a bend where a trail offers stunning views of the lake. Between beech trees, larches, and conifers, you’ll reach the northern promontory of Monte Castello, where Roccolo Park is located. The flat road (via XX Settembre) will take you back to the heart of Pieve. There are also many cycle paths for those seeking a full immersion in nature.
Traditions and Local Cuisine
Like any mountain community, Pieve di Cadore has preserved ancient popular traditions and customs, such as the carnival, along with the typical gastronomic specialties of the Belluno area: schiz cheese, grappa, Lamon beans, beer, and game dishes are some of the local delicacies you must try.
