French Wine and Spirits Exports See Sharp Decline, Sparking Industry Alarm
Imagine being in France’s beautiful vineyards and distilleries, only to hear that the world isn’t buying like before. That’s exactly what happened last year. The Federation of Exporters of Wines & Spirits (FEVS) shared some news that had many in the industry taking a deep breath. The big issue? Sales to the United States took a nosedive because distributors there were trying to get rid of extra bottles piled up during the pandemic. This led to a hefty 22% drop in what France was sending over.
The Fizz Felt It Most
While all wines felt the chill, it was the sparkling ones that really caught a cold, with their value falling by 16%. Still wines managed to keep their heads above water, not losing much value. But the spirits? They were in a tougher spot, seeing a 37% drop in how much they were selling to the U.S., a real shock to the system.
What’s Being Said
Gabriel Picard, the boss over at FEVS, sees this as a wake-up call. It’s time for everyone to be on their toes, ready to adapt to what drinkers want and how the market shifts. He’s also pointing out how important it is for the government to have their back during these times.
To bounce back, Picard says it’s time to look for new places to sell and also to make sure they don’t lose access to the markets they already have, especially with the threat of trade fights hanging over them. He’s likely nodding to the recent tension with China over French brandy, which has turned into a bit of a spat with the EU over other products too.
This disagreement has already hit some big names like Rémy Cointreau, Pernod Ricard, and LVMH hard, with their Cognac sales dipping after China started poking around, leading to a massive €10 billion vanishing from their value.
Even with this storm brewing, the Bureau National Interprofessionnel du Cognac is staying positive, ready to work with China and confident they’re playing by the rules.
Zooming Out
Looking at the bigger picture, French exports to China dropped by 6% last year, pulling €1.2 billion out of France’s pocket. Overall, the total cash from exporting French wines and spirits around the globe slipped to €16.2 billion in 2023, down 5.9% from the year before. It’s been a bumpy ride, but there’s a sense of hope and a lesson in resilience for everyone involved.
