Sip & Guzzle: A Cocktail Renaissance in Greenwich Village
Sip & Guzzle, nestled in the heart of Manhattan’s Greenwich Village at 29 Cornelia Street, heralds the triumphant return of a dynamic duo to the Big Apple. After a decade of refining their craft in Asia, they’re back to make a splash in New York’s cocktail scene.
Gokan’s Asian Cocktail Empire
Shingo Gokan, renowned for his Tokyo hotspot, The SG Club, and a collection of trendsetting bars in Shanghai – including Speak Low, Sober Company, and The Odd Couple – is no stranger to the cocktail world. His journey began at New York’s own Angel’s Share, setting the stage for his illustrious career.
Meanwhile, his counterpart, Schneider, rose to fame at Employees Only in New York, before expanding his horizons to Singapore and then launching The Strangers Club in Panama City.
Schneider expresses his enthusiasm: “Thrilled to be back in the Big Apple, I’m teaming up with the unparalleled Shingo Gokan. We’re excited to bring the essence of The SG Club to New York, blending our unique styles and perspectives.”
Diverse Bartending Styles: The Odd Couple
He reflects on their diverse bartending approaches: “Shingo and I are polar opposites in personality and style. It’s this contrast that sparked our previous success in Shanghai with The Odd Couple. We’re bringing that same magic to New York.”
Schneider takes the reins at Guzzle on the ground floor, channeling the spirit of 1860s New York saloons. The menu features classic and comforting ‘crushable’ cocktails like Apple Manhattans, Pornstar Mojitos, and Highballs, along with unique shochu-based creations from The SG Club.
Gokan’s Intimate Underground Bar
Gokan oversees Sip downstairs, a serene ‘subterranean speakeasy’ paying homage to the historic Kanrin Maru voyage. The space boasts a sleek black bar with a concrete finish and oak-panelled walls, adorned with Japanese art personally selected by Gokan. Ben Yabrow, previously at Double Chicken Please, leads the bartending team.
Signature Cocktails with a Japanese Twist
The drink menu revives beloved classics from The SG Club in Tokyo, each meticulously refined and updated with a Japanese twist. Standouts include the Wagyu Old Fashioned (Bourbon, peanut butter, and Wagyu beef), the Champagne Grasshopper (cacao, mint, and Champagne), and the Sixty Forty, a harmonious blend of a Martini and a Manhattan.
