Gordon & MacPhail Ushers in New Era with Phillip White as CEO
Gordon & MacPhail, the esteemed name in the world of Scotch whisky, has announced the appointment of Phillip White as its new CEO, effective April 2024. White steps into the role with a wealth of experience in the food and drink industry, including a decade-long tenure at giants like Bacardi and Brown-Forman, and recent leadership roles at Kent Frozen Foods and Medina Foodservice.
This leadership transition at Gordon & MacPhail marks a pivotal moment as the company steers towards a new era, focusing on its two distilleries, Benromach and The Cairn, and moving gradually away from the independent bottlings that have been a cornerstone of its legacy.
White’s diverse background in marketing, sales, and distribution positions him as an ideal figure to guide Gordon & MacPhail through its next chapter. His expertise, particularly with global brands and UK retail distribution, aligns seamlessly with the company’s future aspirations.
The appointment follows last year’s announcement by Ewen Mackintosh, the current managing director, of his planned retirement in 2024. Mackintosh’s retirement will culminate a distinguished career spanning over three decades with Gordon & MacPhail, including a decade as its managing director.
Neil Urquhart’s Endorsement
Gordon & MacPhail’s chairman, Neil Urquhart, expressed enthusiasm about White’s arrival, citing his exceptional leadership qualities and experience in the spirits industry. Urquhart emphasized the company’s focus on international brand expansion, workforce development, and significant capital investments, all while maintaining its core values.
White’s Vision for Gordon & MacPhail
In response to his appointment, White expressed his honor in taking on the CEO role, acknowledging Gordon & MacPhail’s significant growth in recent years. His vision includes building upon the company’s legacy as a family-owned business that inspires whisky enthusiasts globally to explore the world of fine single malts and premium spirits.
Investing in the Future
Following the 2022 launch of its innovative distillery The Cairn, Gordon & MacPhail continues its ambitious growth trajectory with a multi-million-pound renovation of its flagship South Street shop in Elgin. Slated for reopening in 2024, the shop will feature an enhanced retail experience, including a rare collection of bottlings and new tasting rooms, offering visitors a unique immersion into the world of fine whiskies.
