The Balvenie Explores AI’s Role in Whisky Crafting: Preserving the Human Touch
In a bold foray into the future, The Balvenie, a distinguished Speyside distillery, has delved into the potential impacts of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on the realm of handcrafted products, including whisky. This exploratory journey is part of The Balvenie’s Makers Project, a visionary initiative that probes the evolving role of AI in the craftsmanship of whisky and other artisanal goods.
The project, steered by Balvenie Malt Master Kelsey McKechnie, in collaboration with renowned ceramicist Ryan Barrett and forward-thinking futurist Anne Lise Kjaer, coincided with the first anniversary of the omnipresent AI tool, ChatGPT, in November. Their engaging discourse is grounded in a comprehensive national survey aimed at capturing public sentiment on this matter.
The survey’s findings are telling: nearly 70 percent of participants value handcrafted items over mass-produced ones, and 73 percent believe that the time invested by an artisan adds inherent value to the creation. Yet, there’s a palpable concern among more than half of the respondents about AI’s potential effects on creativity and traditional crafts.
Anne Lise Kjaer reflected, “While the evolution of AI is inexorable, its current state cannot mimic the human essence of curiosity and intuition that propels craftsmen, creators, and artists. The serendipitous ‘happy accidents’ and spurts of innovation, often the hallmark of human creativity, remain elusive to even the most sophisticated AI.”
Despite these apprehensions, 32 percent of survey respondents are in favor of AI’s development, with 41 percent optimistic that AI could enhance a craftsman’s work. Ceramicist Barrett exemplifies this synergy of artisanship and technology, pioneering unique tools like expansive kilns, an engineered coiling system, and virtual reality software for his creations.
Barrett noted, “AI, as a complement to human creativity, should push and broaden the limits of our artistic endeavors. I embrace it as a wellspring of inspiration, allowing me to delve into complex designs and techniques. Yet, in my craft, it’s ultimately my skilled hands and discerning eye that guide the final outcome.”
Kelsey McKechnie added, “Since its inception over 130 years ago, The Balvenie has championed the art of handcrafting. Despite the technological revolutions that have unfolded, the allure of handcrafted luxury endures. At The Balvenie, we maintain that the most cherished products are those imbued with human touch and meticulous craftsmanship, despite the growing trend of automation and AI in various sectors.”
