Cava Conquers the Globe: A Story of Quality, Innovation, and Growing Demand
While overall sales in the export market have shown only a modest year-on-year uptick of 0.33%, there have been some significant strides in specific regions.
Germany: A Leading Market
Germany has maintained its position as the foremost international market for Cava in the first three quarters of 2023, witnessing a growth of 1.27%. It is closely followed in terms of volume by Belgium, with an increase of 1.95%, and the UK, marking a substantial rise of 19.33%.
Other key global markets have also seen notable sales increases: Brazil leads with a remarkable 76.29% jump, followed by Poland (+33.29%), France (+17.69%), the Netherlands (+11.38%), and Sweden (+6.19%).
Javier Pagés, President of the Cava Regulatory Council, revealed these statistics at a press event in Barcelona. Pagés emphasized the DO’s dedication to enhancing the quality and prestige of Cava, and its commitment to adding value across the entire production chain, from vineyard to winery.
Innovation Driving Success
This record-breaking performance comes on the heels of introducing two new categories: Cava de Guarda, requiring a minimum of nine months of aging, and Cava de Guarda Superior, aged for over 18 months. These introductions, coupled with distinct labeling on bottles, have enabled consumers to easily trace the origin of their Cava.
Global Sparkling Wine Market’s Bright Future
Cava’s success mirrors the global upswing in demand for sparkling wines. Statista forecasts the market will grow by 4.93% annually by 2028. This optimistic outlook is also supported by research from IWSR, which shows a trend toward more informal consumption of sparkling wines, leading to increased demand. Adam Rodgers, Research Director at IWSR Drinks Market Analysis, notes, “Sparkling wine is increasingly seen as suitable for casual occasions, making it a versatile option for a broad range of consumers.”
The growth in Cava sales is further fueled by the sector’s efforts to educate consumers about the diverse styles available and its ongoing initiatives to premiumize its offerings.
