Gormley’s Rising Stake in Naked Wines
On December 15, following an aggressive buying round, Rowan Gormley now commands a 2.93% slice of Naked Wines. His move is part of a broader trend among the company’s leadership, with non-executive director Jack Pailing also expanding his investment, purchasing £61k worth of shares to achieve a 0.91% stake.
This recent activity is a follow-up to earlier maneuvers in November when Gormley, alongside other top-tier executives, scooped up a significant number of shares. This buying spree was a countermeasure against the plummeting value of the online wine retailer, which had to scale down its revenue projections for the year to a decline of 12% to 16%.
Official records from November 9 reveal Gormley’s acquisition of £38,630.68 in Naked Wines shares. This transaction occurred shortly after the announcement that CEO Nick Devlin would immediately vacate his position following additional revenue dips.
Collective Efforts to Stabilize
CFO James Crawford and non-executive director Stephen Bolton joined the buying spree, collectively pouring £75,000 into the company’s stocks, aiming to stabilize the increasingly volatile situation.
Gormley, who reassumed the chairman role in July in an effort to salvage the struggling company, attributed the recent downturn to Devlin’s dual focus on roles in the UK and US. He elaborated that Devlin’s split responsibilities adversely affected the company’s execution. As a result, Devlin agreed to step down as CEO, with Gormley shifting to executive chairman during the search for a replacement. Devlin remains committed to assisting with the transition and maintaining his role as US President through the peak season.
Correction and Clarification
On November 13, Naked Wines rectified previous announcements regarding Gormley’s stakes, clarifying that as of July 4, 2023, Gormley and associated persons held 2,031,000 Ordinary Shares. As of December 18, the company confirmed Gormley’s stake, including associated persons, had risen to 2,175,212 Ordinary Shares, representing about 2.939% of the company’s issued share capital.
