Bitter Christmas for Ferragni and Balocco: Antitrust Wields Millionaire Fine for Sweet Deception
In the Italian confectionery scene, a real Christmas mess is being consumed, which sees Chiara Ferragni and the Balocco confectionery company as protagonists. A bitter epilogue: the Antitrust concludes the investigation into the company’s special pandoros, launched in collaboration with the influencer, with a fine of over one million euros for two entities linked to Ferragni and 420,000 euros for the producers of the Christmas dessert.
The well-known influencer and the companies involved do not seem to accept the decision willingly and are raising the possibility of an appeal. Ferragni, through a post on Instagram, expresses her disappointment: “I’m sorry if my communication was misunderstood. I will continue to dedicate myself to charity, but I will challenge the decision, which I consider unfair.”
The controversy arises from the 2022 Christmas promotional campaign “Chiara Ferragni and Balocco together for the Regina Margherita hospital in Turin,” in which limited edition pandoros were sold to support medical research. However, according to the antitrust, it was implied that the purchase of the pandoros would contribute to a donation to the hospital, when in reality the donation had already been made by Balocco previously.
The companies Fenice and TBS Crew, managers of Chiara Ferragni’s rights, received over one million euros for the trademark license and the creation of advertising content without contributing directly to the hospital. The Antitrust also criticizes the price of “designer” pandoro, approximately two and a half times higher than the classic one, contributing to misleading consumers.
Consumer reactions were quick to respond, with many now requesting a refund for the product. For his part, Balocco states that he does not agree with the antitrust decision and reserves the right to act to protect his rights, underscoring that he always operates in compliance with correctness and transparency.
In this intricate Christmas scenario, it remains to be seen how the story will evolve and what the future moves of the protagonists involved in this unexpected mix of fashion, Christmas sweets, and legal issues will be.
