Octomore 14.4: Bruichladdich’s Bold Leap in Whisky Innovation with Colombian Oak
Bruichladdich Distillery launches a limited edition that challenges whisky norms: the Octomore 14.4. This unique expression, capped at just 3,540 bottles, is a testament to innovative whisky making. Octomore, renowned since its debut in 2008, is synonymous with super-heavy peating and a bold approach to maturation.
This particular batch, distilled from 100% Scottish mainland Concerto barley, underwent malting to an intense 106ppm. It was then matured for five years, reaching a potent 59.2% ABV, nearly mirroring cask strength.
What sets the Octomore 14.4 apart is its exclusive maturation in Colombian virgin oak casks. This choice of wood, akin to French oak in structure, imparts a distinctive sweetness, characterized by vanilla and caramel notes. The barrels, varied in their toasting levels, were carefully combined to achieve a harmonious profile.
Adam Hannett, the leading mind at Bruichladdich, emphasizes this release as a continued exploration in whisky innovation. The Colombian oak’s interaction with the peated Octomore spirit was an unprecedented experiment, offering new insights into the interplay of wood and whisky.
This bold venture into unknown territory reflects Octomore’s ethos – always challenging, always evolving. Hannett views each series as an opportunity to redefine the whisky landscape, embracing the paradox of a whisky that is seemingly too young, too strong, and overly peated, yet manages to captivate.
On the sensory front, Octomore 14.4 delivers a nose of toasted, resinous oak, while the palate is treated to a blend of toffee, smooth caramel, and wood spices. The finish is creamy, courtesy of the oak’s vanilla, with Octomore’s signature peat smoke making a lingering appearance.
Available exclusively at the distillery and through its website, a 700ml bottle of this groundbreaking spirit is priced at £175 (US$220).
