Sogliano’s Fossa Cheese Fair 2023: A Culinary Festival of History and Taste
The people of Sogliano al Rubicone, a delicious PDO, will celebrate the pride and greatness of Romagna for three Sundays in a row, on November 19, 26, and December 3, 2023. The Fossa di Sogliano Dop Cheese Fair is now in its 48th year. It takes place on the days of the Feast of Santa Caterina, which used to be when the cheese came out of the pits.
The fermentation and ripening that happen in the maturing pits are what make this cheese unique. They give it a unique smell and taste.
A fun fact: digging pits in the tuff under houses to store food, keep it fresh, and keep it safe from raids goes back to the Malatesta time. Before putting the cheese in the pit, each one is still cleaned in a way that has been passed down from generation to generation.
You can try the tastings at the fair. They taste even better when mixed with things like honey and caramelized figs, or they can be found on the menus of restaurants in the hills.
You can try a lot of tasty local treats at the Fossa di Sogliano Dop Cheese Fair, like savòr, a jam made from different kinds of fruit and oilseeds, saba (boiled must), the piadinas cooked at the Montetiffi clay baking trays stand, and different kinds of cured meats like coppatello.
Besides the festival itself, there are lots of other things going on, like talks, concerts, plays and musicals, and fun things for kids to do.
Take advantage of the free shows that run from 9.30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. and from 3 to 6 p.m. These include the Arte Povera Collection, the Linea Christa Museum, the Vintage Record Museum, the Leonardo da Vinci Museum and Romagna, the Veggiani Collection, the Mining Museum, and the Fossa Cheese Museum. Also, we want to tell you that you can take free guided tours of the historic center’s most important sites.
