Misunderstood Order Leads to a £2,000 Cocktail Shock in London’s Luxurious Hotel Bar
Lynsey Bennet from Belfast shared an intriguing story on TikTok about a memorable mix-up during her stay in London with her husband. In late December, after an evening at the theatre and dining out, the slightly inebriated couple decided to visit their hotel’s bar for a nightcap.
There, they struck up a conversation with a new bartender from Toronto – a city they had visited that summer. Bennet, usually a Champagne aficionado, spontaneously opted for something different and ordered a cocktail named 1890.
However, the mix-up began when the young bartender served her a lavish concoction featuring Cristal champagne, gold leaf, and 30-year-old Cognac. After enjoying the extravagant drink and signing a large book (believing themselves quite sophisticated), the shock came with the presentation of the bill: £2,000.
Bennet, stunned, realized she couldn’t afford this unexpected expense. Her husband, upset by the pricey error, left the bar in a huff. Bennet, in an attempt to clarify, explained to the bartender her misunderstanding of the price – she had thought the gap between “18” and “90” was a decimal point. The hotel manager assured her that the issue would be resolved and encouraged her to enjoy the remainder of their five-night stay.
Following a brief avoidance of the bar, Bennet returned on New Year’s Eve, where a conversation with the manager led to a startling revelation: the bartender had been fired due to the incident. Overcome with guilt, Bennet was in tears until she learned it was just a jest; the bartender hadn’t been sacked, but additional training was implemented to avoid similar mishaps, which had apparently happened before.
Reflecting on the experience, Bennet confessed her lack of enjoyment of the cocktail, given its whisky base – not her preferred taste. She humorously concluded, “I will forever check the price of cocktails from now on.”
