UK Pub’s Bold Move Amid Soaring Costs: Tokens for Outdoor Heating
Hydes Bar Norton in Stockton-on-Tees Faces Rising Pressures
In the face of escalating operational costs, UK hospitality venues are at a crossroads. Hydes Bar Norton, situated in Stockton-on-Tees, recently conveyed a significant policy shift to its patrons. The pub announced on its Facebook page that due to an alarming increase in energy charges — now two and a half times higher than last year — it will be implementing a new system for outdoor heating.
The pub’s patrons must now pay £1 for every 30 minutes of heater use, with tokens available for purchase at the bar. This decision, a tough one, was made as an alternative to a blanket rise in drink prices. The pub emphasized that despite the charges, the outdoor heaters will remain accessible throughout the day.
Hydes Bar Norton’s Facebook statement highlighted the challenging situation: “The running costs for outdoor heaters, exceeding £1,000 a month, are not sustainable for us, especially when the bar is almost empty and already heated inside.”
An independent establishment, Hydes Bar Norton candidly expressed its awareness of potential customer dissatisfaction, but emphasized the necessity of this decision amidst skyrocketing operational costs.
This situation is not unique to Hydes Bar Norton. Across the UK, the hospitality sector is experiencing similar financial pressures. As of September’s end, the total number of licensed premises stood at 99,916 — a stark contrast to the 2003 figure of 144,055. Pubs, bars, and nightclubs have been particularly hard hit, with a net decline of 43.6% over the past two decades.
