D.O Penedès Champions Organic Winemaking, Elevating Xarel.lo Globally
Embracing Organics: D.O Penedès’ Visionary Shift for a Sustainable Future
“Seven years in the making, our commitment to organic practices is a response to the future,” Joan Huguet, president of D.O Penedès, shared with conviction.
“Our coastal proximity gifts us with minimal adversity, paving an effortless path to organic viticulture. We’re certain that this approach not only enriches our landscape but also yields healthier, more sustainable results. Amidst shifting climates, our lessened rainfall simplifies our battle against fungal threats.”
Huguet asserts with confidence, “By 2025, organic certification will be obligatory. Membership in D.O Penedès will be exclusive to those who embrace organic methods.”
Despite the varying altitudes of Penedès’ vineyards, stretching from sea level to the zenith of 600 meters, the region is united in its organic crusade. Huguet reveals that “a collaborative educational effort among growers, wineries, associations, and agrarian academies is demystifying the transition to organic farming.”
He also assures that D.O Penedès is committed to “alleviating the financial burden of this transition for our smaller producers, both in the vineyards and the cellars.”
Producing 18 million bottles of still wine and a notable 1 million of sparkling, Penedès coexists with D.O Cava and D.O Catalunya. This presents a choice of viticultural paths for the growers, as Huguet notes.
The challenge now lies in differentiating the trio of D.Os, each with a penchant for Cava, and articulating their unique identities to the consumers.
D.O Penedès, in its stride towards organic prominence, is also championing its native white Xarel.lo grape.
“The understated elegance of Xarel.lo, with its gastronomic versatility and neutral palate, is designed to complement, not compete with culinary art,” Huguet elucidates. “These wines demand a presence at the dining table, enhancing rather than overpowering the dishes they accompany.”
With a belief in Xarello’s potential for oak aging, Huguet’s vision encompasses a global recognition, picturing Xarel.lo gracing the wine lists of the world’s finest restaurants.
