New Trio of Core-Range Single Malts Unveiled by Glenglassaugh
The Highland distillery underscores a fresh orientation for its ‘coastal single malts’ with the launch of the latest expressions.
Introduction
15 years following its resurgence, the Glenglassaugh Distillery in Scotland introduces a novel set of core expressions, defining a fresh benchmark for the Highland distillery’s spirits. The distillery, situated near Portsoy, resumed operations in 2008 after more than two decades of inactivity. It was the final one among three distilleries, including Benriach and GlenDronach in Speyside, acquired by master blender Billy Walker, before being sold to the American spirits group, Brown-Forman in 2016.
The New Expressions
This novel set of three single malts, which are potentially the most pivotal releases in Glenglassaugh’s new era, are expected to be a milestone in its creative trajectory, while maintaining the hallmark tropical, coastal-flavored style it is recognized for. The collection features a principal 12-year-old single malt, and two expressions without age statements:
- Sandend – an unpeated single malt inspired by the Sandend Bay, visible from the distillery’s warehouses.
- Portsoy – a lightly peated single malt influenced by the distillery’s coastal location and the profound, occasionally turbulent waters of the Moray Firth.
Master Blender’s Statement
Rachel Barrie, the master blender of Glenglassaugh Distillery, stated, “The fresh portfolio amalgamates all the essential components of Glenglassaugh’s spirit. Fueled by its truly unparalleled coastal location, the new expressions transport us to a place where the spirit is rekindled and the soul rejuvenated, compelling us to pause, inhale deeply, and appreciate our surroundings.”
Tasting Experience
“Tasting Glenglassaugh single malt offers an immersive coastal experience of Sandend Bay and the ancient harbor towns in its proximity. The land and sea’s symbiosis shapes the senses, awakening them to the commanding yet soothing crash of waves and the sweet aroma of gorse in the air.”
Whisky Details
- Glenglassaugh 12 Years Old – Matured in a fusion of bourbon, sherry, and red wine casks, bottled at 45% ABV.
- Sandend – Ages in bourbon and sherry casks, accompanied by a few ex-manzanilla casks. This expression blends notes of vanilla fudge, salted caramel, and tropical pineapple with sea herbs, minerality, and citrus notes.
- Portsoy – Matured in a blend of sherry, bourbon, and port casks. It offers a rich spirit with hints of soy sauce, dark fruit, and dark chocolate, along with signature tropical fruit and minerality.
Upcoming Releases
Glenglassaugh also plans to release several whiskies dating back to the 1960s and 1970s later this year, alongside these new expressions.
Collaboration and Photography Series
In conjunction with the launches, Glenglassaugh has collaborated with landscape photographer Richard Gatson for a photography series, which will emphasize the distillery’s bond with the land and sea.
