Cantina Goccia introduces a filling station for paper wine bottles
Cantina Goccia, the first beverage company to release wine in a paper bottle, is launching a specialized filling service to assist other winemakers in their transition from glass to paper.
Cantina Goccia has put into operation the world’s first filling machine developed specifically for paper bottles.
The plant will be located at their winery in Umbria, Italy, and will initially be capable of filling 1,000 bottles per hour, with future plans to increase capacity.
Designed by the British packaging company Frugalpac, the paper bottles are five times lighter than their glass counterparts. They consist of a paper shell, a recyclable food-grade plastic pouch, and a plastic screwcap.
According to reports, Cantina Goccia has filled 114,000 paper Frugal bottles since debuting its wine in the alternative format in June 2020. 64,000 of these bottles have been filled with the producer’s own wine, and the other 50,000 have been used by other people, such as the UK-based wine company When in Rome, which makes wine in non-traditional packaging.
Ceri Parke, co-owner of Cantina Goccia, said on the new venture: “While we were happy to be the first wine to be marketed in a Frugal Container, we want to assist other wineries in making the transition to a more ecologically responsible bottle.
“Because of this, we decided to switch from our present semi-automated filling service to a considerably speedier one created exclusively for paper Frugal Bottles.”
Cantina Goccia is “fully prepared to test and transition to this new equipment, which we helped develop based on our considerable expertise dealing with the bottle and its filling needs,” according to Parke.
She said, “We believe the Frugal Bottle has the potential to significantly decarbonize the beverage sector, and we’re excited to provide a new filling service to assist other businesses in reducing their carbon footprint as well.”
