The Gold Rush cocktail evokes the good old days of the Klondike gold diggers but it has nothing to do with it! It is a very recent cocktail, a simple variation of the whiskey sour, but made with Bourbon whiskey, honey and lime or lemon. Nothing exceptional, but as you well know, honey is a rainbow of flavors, while the meager sugar syrup is a trivial sweetener.
Are these small differences enough to make the Gold Rush cocktail worthy? The answer is a shrill yes, because despite being a very simple, immediate and spartan cocktail, the Gold Rush will not let you find strands of gold, but certainly a lot of pleasure. Even the softness that honey can give is a whole different story and not just at an aromatic level.
Legend has it that the Gold Rush cocktail was invented by the histrionic bartender T.J. Siegal, host of the Milk & Honey club, located in the Lower East Side of New York. And that’s all from the direction, take the shaker and let’s get it inside!
Gold Rush cocktail ingredients and doses
- 6 cl of Bourbon whiskey
- 3 cl of honey mix
- 2 cl of lemon or lime juice
How to make the Gold Rush cocktail
Let’s start with the honey premix, very easy to make. According to the number of cocktails to be made, adjust: the honey mix is made by mixing honey and water in equal parts. This is a handy way to start diluting and dissolving honey. It is not a syrup, but a premix, so use it within the day. It is not a syrup, so it won’t keep for months, if you want the honey to keep, don’t do anything, it can keep on its own!
Well, now let’s move on to the preparation of the actual cocktail. Squeeze the lemon and strain the juice.
Put some ice in the shaker, add the lemon juice, the bourbon whiskey, the honey premix and shake vigorously for at least 40 seconds. We want the honey to blend well and be perfectly melted, so don’t spare yourself.
