The single malt Superstition Isle of Jura 12 Years whisky is the most balanced and smooth distillate of the legendary Jura Distillery.
We could call it the entry-level product for all lovers who want to approach the world of peaty whiskeys without taking a punch in the face from the peat of Ardbeg and Lagavulin drams.
With entry-level whisky, we do not want to diminish this distillate, but there is no doubt that it is only the first step in the hall of this fantastic distillery. It’s a stylized whiskey marked by the wood, where the spices define the aromatic volume. This does not mean that it is not good. On the whole, it is a pleasant distillate, easy to drink, with an elegant profile, but a little static and not very characterized. Let’s say that it was born for pleasure. It has a little bit of everything in the correct dose.
How Is Superstition Isle of Jura 12 produced?
Discontinuous distillation in copper alembic from malted and lightly smoked barley with peat. After a double distillation, the whiskey rests in barrels used to refine the bourbon. It is a blend of two whiskeys aged 13 and 21, not exactly a youngster!
The bouquet
The color is amber with such golden reflections. The aromas are a graceful symphony of honey, toffee, cedar, acacia, ripe fruit, custard, endless dried fruit, flowers, light traces of peat, all framed by strong iodized echoes due to the influence of the sea.
The variety is discreet, it moves with cleanliness without ever overdoing it and although the spices are massive, it lets out herbaceous suggestions, which embellish the aromatic picture. Long finish with aromatic herbs, sea and beeswax. As close as it is, do not think this peat is minimally comparable to that of Islay’s cousins.
What Does Superstition Isle of Jura 12 taste like?
The mouth is warm and round, very smooth despite the tips of pepper and alcohol that sting the palate. There is salt, iodine, and a light campfire at the back of the nose. The structure is sound, firm, well underlined by a rocky sapidity. Flavors of licorice, honey and candied citrus in the finish. Overall it is a well-designed whiskey, very set and stylized, but nothing to complain about. What it lacks in charisma is well compensated by pleasantness and balance.
For those who love not too peaty spirits or those who want to try a peaty but not too aggressive whiskey for the first time, this is the bottle to taste.
Price
35-40 euros: a fair price for a bottle of peaty whiskey that does not disappoint. The quality overall is very acceptable.
As a meditation distillate, it is perfect. You can serve it without fear of disappointing anyone since it is easy to approach but never bland. Recommended pairings are chocolate-based desserts, trifle, chocolate, salmon terrines, brisket and pulled pork, chocolate salami, apple pie, tiramisu, creme brùlée.
