2015 Pinot Nero DOC Riserva Bolzano Review And Tasting Notes

The 2015 Pinot Nero DOC Riserva Bolzano winery is a purebred Pinot. We must be honest, the fact that he had made barriques frightened us a little. Pinot Noir is delicate and easily impressionable by the hints of oak; instead, the aromatic purity comes out very clean.

This is what we like, and we want to underline this wine: the frankness of the aromas, the beautiful acid boost, the bitter but nuanced taste of the tannins, the classic fragrances of mushrooms, cloves, mint, and seaweed that it can offer. In short, it is a wine made with great care, respect is felt, and this brings out a certain grit of tannins.

But beware, the current vintage is 2015. This Pinot Noir is still a child, and not that the tannins are not satisfactory; indeed, they are perfectly delineated. Their consistency, that bitter touch (that almost bites) give hope.

In Pinot Noir, it rarely comes out ready, or at least it is ready as a wine, but drunk now, it is only at the beginning of its glorious aromatic-ethereal development. The same can be said for all the great red wines that, over time, evolve into splendid black swans.

But let’s get to the point how is this Pinot Nero DOC Riserva from Cantina Bolzano?

It is good, precise, rich in extract, and with a strong territorial character, and the price is in line, if not lower in many cases, with the other Pinot Noir Riserva from Alto Adige.

Color

Garnet: wonderfully transparent.

The bouquet

Classic nose: clean, earthy, and rich in floral echoes with geranium, lavender, and roses. Warmer notes of wood then take over, with leaves, musk, and truffle, followed by chocolate and spicy arabesques declined with finesse. Elegant and sharp, shady, the fruit is austere as it should be, with ethereal traces that begin to surface. Good persistence.

The taste

Smooth mouth, furrowed by good sapidity, adequate and well-blended freshness, earthy finish that caresses the palate. The structure is agile, finely sculpted, and subtle. The overall balance is enjoyable, never bland. Wide and long finish with mushrooms and roses.

Food Pairings

Truffle in all its manifestations: risotto with truffles, passatelli with fondue and truffles, and lasagna with porcini mushrooms. Also worth trying with everyday dishes such as pizza Margherita, veal with tuna sauce, gnocchi with meat sauce, chicken curry, ribs with barbecue sauce, baked lasagna, pulled pork, hamburger, Wellington fillet, paella.
