There are no reliable data about the history of this drink, except that the Pina Colada is the official cocktail of Puerto Rico.

What is a Pina Colada?

The Pina is a refreshing, delicious cocktail, one of the best-known and in demand all over the world, suitable for any time of the day, because of its sweet, fluffy, easy-drinking flavor: the classic long drinks to sip in total relax. If you are planning a swimming pool party keep the Pina in mind and it’ll be great.

About the etymology: “pina” means pineapple and “colada” strained, referring to the fruit: yeah if want some juice you have to crash and pestle mercilessly these pinas.

But no more talk, let’s go the original Pina Colada recipe, which is very simple, based on only three ingredients: rum, pineapple, and coconut milk.

Ingredients of the Pina Colada cocktail

  • 3 cl white rum
  • 9 cl of pineapple juice
  • 3 cl of coconut milk
  • ice
  • 1 slice of pineapple (optional, but is a cocktail without fresh fruit?)
  • 1 slice of pineapple and maraschino cherry for garnish

How to prepare the perfect Pina Colada

Cut pineapple into little chunks, put them in a bowl and crush with a pestle or a fork. Strain the juice and put the remaining of the fruits in a strainer and press with a spoon to get all the juice you can. And the juice for the Pina is made: it’s a long, tedious job, but there are no shortcuts to greatness and if you to make a great cocktail you need fresh, handmade juice.

Pour the pineapple juice, rum, coconut milk and the same amount of ice in a blender. Blend for 15 seconds, the cocktail must be fluffy. Pour into a large glass and garnish with a slice of pineapple, a maraschino cherry, and straw.

Non-alcoholic Pina Colada

Remember that the Pina Colada is also a great non-alcoholic cocktail: the creamy flavor of the coconut combined with the aromaticity of the pineapple create a beautiful symphony that will give you a full of vitamins!


For a richer, sumptuous Pina Colada use dark rum instead of the classic rum blanco.
